Te Moananui a Kiwa Te Kōhanga Reo partnered with Play’n’Learn to deliver a refreshed learning environment that supports kaupapa-led practice, flexible daily use, and calm, structured learning zones. The focus was on creating a space where tamariki can move freely between active play, quiet retreat, and group learning, while maintaining strong visibility and flow for kaiako.
The fitout combined practical storage and accessible resource display with purpose-built cultural and identity-led elements. Custom joinery and feature pieces were integrated to create clear learning areas without overfilling the space, ensuring the environment remains adaptable as routines and group needs change.
Key elements included:
Custom wharenui-style retreat spaces for quiet regulation and belonging
Child-accessible cubbies and resource shelving to support independence
Functional room dividers and feature joinery to define zones and improve flow
Integrated play and learning stations (including art, literacy, and social play)
The result is a cohesive, high-function kōhanga reo environment where furniture, layout, and cultural design work together to support everyday learning, identity, and connection.
