Play’n’Learn refreshed Te Kōhanga Reo o Nga Pihi O Te Purapura Pai with custom furniture, defined learning zones, and culturally aligned design elements to improve flow, supervision, and tamariki-led exploration.
Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngāti Kahu
Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngāti Kahu partnered with Play’n’Learn to deliver a culturally grounded fitout that supports tamariki wellbeing, sensory regulation, and kaupapa Māori learning through thoughtful layout, natural materials, and clearly defined spaces. The environment balances open learning areas with retreat and regulation zones, ensuring both collective engagement and individual calm are supported throughout the day.
Key fitout outcomes:
- Custom birch plywood furniture and integrated storage designed at tamariki height to support independence, tidy practice, and ease of access
- Defined learning zones created through low-level shelving, curved layouts, and open sightlines, enabling kaiako supervision while maintaining spatial clarity
- Purpose-built wharenui-style forms and house structures that support dramatic play, storytelling, and cultural authenticity
- Central communal areas featuring curved soft seating and modular furniture to encourage hui, collaboration, and social connection
- Dedicated retreat and calm spaces using enclosed bench seating, soft cushions, and muted tones to support regulation and quiet engagement
- Custom sensory room designed as a low-stimulation environment, incorporating soft flooring, projected light visuals, tactile wall elements, mirrors, and minimal furniture to support sensory exploration and emotional regulation
- Use of natural timber textures combined with greens and blue tones to create a calming, grounded atmosphere reflective of whenua and taiao
- Flexible furniture on castors allowing spaces to be reconfigured easily to suit different activities and daily rhythms
The result is a cohesive, kaupapa‑aligned environment where layout, furniture, and sensory design work together to nurture tamariki development, strengthen cultural identity, and support everyday practice at Te Kōhanga Reo o Ngāti Kahu.
